What is managed hosting, and who needs it?
Updated on .
Managed hosting is hosting where the hosting company runs the server for you. The company installs the server software, applies updates and keeps the server secure. You look after the website only.
What is the difference between managed and unmanaged hosting?
The difference is who does the server work. On a managed plan the hosting company does it. On an unmanaged plan you do it.
| Task | Managed hosting | Unmanaged hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Install the server software | Hosting company | You |
| Update the server software | Hosting company | You |
| Secure the server | Hosting company | You |
| Build and update the website | You | You |
Which hosting types are managed?
Shared web hosting is managed: the hosting company runs the server and you get a control panel. A VPS is unmanaged unless the plan says otherwise, because you control the server software. The Hostinger pricing page lists "Managed hosting for WordPress" among the features of its website plans.
Does managed hosting cost more?
No, not in our tests. On 12 October 2026 the lowest-priced managed plan, Hostinger Premium, cost $2.39 a month for 48 months. The lowest-priced VPS, KVM 1, cost $5.19 a month for 24 months. The Hostinger coupon code page lists the tested price of each plan.
Who should choose managed hosting?
Anyone who has not managed a server before. A managed plan lets you run a website without learning server administration.
Who should choose unmanaged hosting?
A developer who needs full control of the server. The guide on shared vs VPS hosting compares a managed shared plan with a VPS.
